Five Tips for Better Focus Throughout Your Day

People like you and me – we are BUSY.  Pulled in a thousand different directions, fighting the daily fatigue of life and maintaining a positive attitude.  Add in a chronic illness like Hashimotos Thyroid or Hypothyroid and the brain fog and lack of mental clarity that accompanies that and well, I’m toast.
It took a close look at my daily nutrition to begin to see changes in how I felt.  But even following autoimmune paleo, then maintaining paleo and then the candida diet …. I was still FOGGY in the brain.

And we’re not talking about a little “I can’t find my car keys” ….we’re talking can’t follow trains of thought.  Can’t remember what simple vocabulary words are – like shoes or bed or plate.  Frightening.
Maybe you can relate.

Here are a few tips that helped me regain my FOCUS and energy during the day.

  • WRITE THINGS DOWN & PLAN IT OUT
For real.  Seems so simple, but keeping a list of five or six crucial tasks to complete will help you to focus on priorities.  If it does not need to be done today, put it on tomorrow’s list.  I have found Evernote to be super helpful in tracking my lists.   Once you have your list, write down your plan of action.  Maybe this is your schedule, maybe your order of errand stops, or the research you need to do
  • CREATE YOUR FOCUS SPACE
Every aspect of your day presents different challenge.  Helping your kids with homework may mean no music or television or talking.  That office project may require a sound machine.  Turn off your cell phone notifications.  Figure out what allows you the best and maximum concentration.
  • PRIORITIZE! PRIORITIZE!  PRIORITZE!
Making a list is important but knowing what is MOST important on your list is absolutely necessary.  Maybe you can’t do task C until you do task E – then do task E as soon as possible.   Figure out your game plan with doing what is most important first!
  • DARE TO DELEGATE!
I know.  I know…I still struggle with this myself, but people like you and me have to realize that delegation is not death!  Is it really a big deal if your 12 year old unloads the dishwasher or your 7 year old sets the table instead of you?  Or maybe those extra overtime hours need to be passed up to someone else.  Delegation empowers your family and those around you!  Don’t simply “let it go” … delegate!

Clean Eating Simplified for Those Who Are Busy

I hear you!  You’re in your car transporting one kid to baseball practice, another to ballet and then trying to get to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription.  Make a healthy dinner?  Seriously?

Okay, Okay, let’s got to fantasy land for a moment…. I want you to imagine this day with me:

Everyone wakes up in a good mood and cooperates with getting ready for the day. (I told you, this is fantasy!!!) You are having an AMAZING hair day and have magically toned and tightened your booty (if we’re going to have a fantasy, let’s enjoy it!)

You pull a magical bag out of your freezer and plop the contents into your crockpot and a few minutes later everyone gets in your car, drives away happy and nothing but smiles.

You go through your day, never having to stop at a red light and you get a lunch AND potty break.

You and your family arrive home for those few short minutes to change your clothes and make your way out the door again.  BUT this time, you get to sit down, have a plate of warm, already cooked, healthy food!

….and then your wake up!

As a busy mom myself who wants to eat healthy and follow a healthy nutrition plan, this fantasy is all too familiar to me!  I WANT things to work this way, but for years made the excuse that I was just too busy to eat clean or healthy.  Honestly, I didn’t think what I was eating was all “that bad”
As the fantasy above indicated, using your crockpot is one way to keep it simple.  Here are THREE TIPS to simplify the clean eating process that will help you to make healthier choices:

  1. PLAN & PREPARE

Yes, actually sit down for a few moments before you do your grocery shopping and plan out your evening meals.  It can be very overwhelming to plan out all three meals and snacks.  By starting with just one meal you can simplify the healthy eating process and also avoid the question “What’s for dinner?”.  Each week, I create a few frozen meals in a bag that are crock pot ready!  They include the meat, veggies, broth and spices.  We’ve even made crockpot lasagna and mac & cheese!

2.  KEEP IT SIMPLE, SWEETIE

KISS. If you choose food in its most whole, unprocessed food, you will find that it is not only FAST, but also EASY and if you purchase it right CHEAP!  I keep my freezer stocked with frozen bags of veggie steamers like broccoli and asparagus or snap peas.  These are a great way to add veggies to your meal while keeping it simple.  Also, fresh fruit and veggies on hand, washed and ready to eat make the “grab & go” concept easier!

3.  REDEFINE FAST FOOD

Along with keeping fresh fruits and veggies handy, keeping a healthy nutritional supplement around is also beneficial.  Just be aware that not all nutritional supplements are created equal!  My Go-To healthy eating simplified is of course, Shakeology.  On evenings when I am “mom’s taxi” It takes me 5 minutes to mix my Shakeology and I know I’m getting a daily dose of dense superfood healthy nutrition simplified.

Breaking Free From Food Cravings

I know that I used too SUFFER.  I knew that eating that chocolate or donut was a poor food choice, but I would SUFFER until I caved…and then set in the stomach ache…and then the guilt…

Sound familiar?  If it does, you’re NOT alone.  And while you may be beating yourself up over that extra piece of candy or the half a bag of potato chips you downed… Let’s look at WHY you are craving and how we can overcome it.

REASON 1: You can’t get it out of your mind

No, really…There are triggers in your brain that are activated by sugary or fatty foods.  Your memory of foods is ALSO very powerful and can trigger cravings.   Practicing meditation and being intentional with food is often helpful in “resetting” your mind and focusing on other things like feelings of happiness or joy and finding peace.  Calming the mind and focusing on something other than food is very freeing!

REASON 2: STRESS

Maybe you call it eating your emotions or finding your happy place, but if you’re like me when you are under stress you are in search for the CHOCOLATE or FRENCH FRIES.  You know, the homemade, fresh cut, drizzled in just the right amount of salt and malt vinegar.  Carbohydrates release serotonin.  Serotonin makes us feel calm.  In fact, there have been studies with stressed out rats that the combination of fats and sugars are even more effective at releasing serotonin than just carbs alone.

REASON 3: LACK OF NUTRIENTS

Cravings can also  be a sign of a nutritional deficiency or dehydration.  When your body lacks what it needs, it will crave what it isn’t getting.  Our bodies are SO intuitive and will tell you exactly what you need – you just have to tune in and listen!

So how do you overcome this and BREAK FREE from your cravings?

Mind over matter isn’t just a saying.  For years I struggled with food addiction – only thinking about food.  More like obsess, actually.  Funny thing it – it wasn’t just unhealthy junk food I was focused on.  I was just focused on FOOD.  Part of how I work with my health and fitness clients is by focusing on what we crave and we take a deep look at our spiritual wellness to help focus our attention to more suitable cravings!  We work through a devotion series to help us focus on Jesus — where our cravings actually belong!

Getting your stress level managed will be substantially helpful.  Stress is not only a reason for food cravings, but can also cause lack of sleep, weight gain, other health issues and just plain make your life unpleasant.  Find a healthy way to reduce stress like fitness.  Need help?  I love connecting people with fitness programs that meet your goals!
